March 19 (Reuters) - The Iranian national team are continuing to prepare for the World Cup finals and have no intention of pulling out of the tournament even if they will not travel to the United States, soccer chief Mehdi Taj said on Wednesday. Iran were one of the first nations to qualify for the finals but their participation has been in doubt since the conflict between the Islamic Republic and the United States began in late February. The tournament runs from June 11 to July 19 and is being staged in the U.S., Mexico and Canada.

Putin said he had met Larijani repeatedly and expressed sympathy to Iran’s leadership and people. In his message, Putin described Larijani as a “true friend” of Russia who contributed significantly to strengthening ties between Moscow and Tehran. He said Larijani’s memory would endure as someone who helped advance the countries’ strategic partnership.

Displaced families gather in Lebanon’s Sidon after Israeli evacuation warnings The coastal city of Sidon in southern Lebanon saw an influx of displaced people on Wednesday after the Israeli military issued evacuation warnings for Tyre and surrounding areas a day earlier. The Lebanese University campus in Sidon opened its doors to those fleeing the Tyre district, initially without basic supplies, the Associated Press reported. “Unfortunately, we had to accommodate them without mattresses or blankets at first,” shelter organiser Saad Ghazzawi said.

An international media association on Wednesday criticised an "unprovoked assault" by Israeli police on journalists in Jerusalem, which it said left a CNN producer with a fractured wrist. The Foreign Press Association (FPA) said police officers on Tuesday night "unnecessarily and aggressively repelled a group of journalists who were doing their jobs, documenting individuals who were praying outside the walls of the Old City". It said police detained several journalists, damaging photographic equipment and confiscating memory cards.

China says to provide humanitarian assistance to Iran, Middle East nations China said on Tuesday it will provide humanitarian assistance to Middle Eastern countries, including Iran and Lebanon, targeted in US and Israeli strikes in the now three-week war. "China has decided to provide emergency humanitarian assistance to Iran, Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq. It is hoped this will help alleviate the humanitarian plight faced by the local populations," foreign ministry spokesman Lin Jian told a press conference.
