Analysis-Middle East war disrupts pharma air routes, risks cancer drugs supply

LONDON, March 16 (Reuters) - War in the Middle East is disrupting the flow of critical medicines to the Gulf, imperilling supply routes for cancer drugs and other treatments that require refrigeration and forcing companies to reroute flights and find overland access into the region, industry executives said. The conflict, sparked by U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran two weeks ago and broadened by Iranian strikes around the region, has knocked out key air transit hubs and closed shipping routes, snarling the movement of goods for many products from medicines to food and oil.

War in Iran, chaos in the Gulf, repression in the west: and the thread that binds them all is Palestine | Nesrine Malik

In the Middle East, the occupation is the original sin. And those who banked on this US-backed ‘stability’ now find it giving way beneath them A war spiralling in the Middle East. A death toll now in the thousands across Iran and Lebanon. Energy prices soaring. The Gulf seized up with Iranian strikes. It’s one of those eras that feels bewildering, incomprehensible, out of control. But there is, at the heart of it, a simple logic: everything that is unfolding is a result of Israel’s occupation of the Palestinians. As the conflagration spreads, the connection to Palestine becomes obscured. But it is clear how much of the stability of the Middle East was secured at the expense of the Palestinians. Look at the region before 7 October 2023. US policy on the Middle East focused on “integration’’: containment of Iran, signing up more Arab countries to normalise relations with Israel and the creation, therefore, of a bloc of economic and security interests under the US military umbrella. UN peacekeepers fired upon during patrols in southern Lebanon

UN peacekeepers fired upon during patrols in southern Lebanon UN Interim Force in Lebanon (Unifil) on Monday said three of its patrols were attacked and returned fire “in self-defence” and continued their patrols, with no injuries reported. Last week, a UN base came under artillery fire from the Israeli military, injuring three Ghanaian peacekeepers. Unifil has said it is investigating whether that was a deliberate targeting of UN personnel by Israeli forces. The incident comes as fighting intensified across southern Lebanon, with heavy Israeli air strikes reported around the city of Khiam and elsewhere in the south. Strikes were also reported in the Bekaa Valley near the Syrian border and in the southern suburbs of Beirut.

‘El Guapo’: The Spanish PM standing up to Trump – podcast

Madrid-based journalist Guy Hedgecoe explains why Pedro Sánchez has been one of the few European leaders to challenge the US president on Iran When the US and Israel launched their attack on Iran two weeks ago, the response from European leaders was muted and ambiguous. Uneasy about the strikes but unwilling to condemn Donald Trump outright. There was one notable exception, however: Pedro Sánchez, the prime minister of Spain. As he would say in his public announcement – explaining to Spaniards why he had not allowed the US to use two military bases – the Spanish government’s position could be summarised in four words: ‘no a la guerra’, no to war.
