Airlines in the Asia-Pacific region, including Qantas, Air India and Cathay Pacific, have hiked fares -- or will soon -- to factor in surging jet fuel prices spurred by war in the Mideast. The average world price of aviation fuel reached $173.91 a barrel on Monday, according to the benchmark Platts index, nearly double the levels of January and well above crude oil. This is explained by refining costs, but also by the fact that kerosene is a lower priority than petrol or diesel, according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

VATICAN CITY, March 11 (Reuters) - Pope Leo on Wednesday lamented the death of numerous civilians in the ongoing Iran war and also expressed closeness to people in Lebanon, saying the country, targeted by Israeli strikes, was going through a "great trial." It’s called the Dahiya doctrine – and the IDF and US air force are using it to destroy domestic support in Iran Paul Rogers is emeritus professor of peace studies at Bradford University and author of Losing Control: International Security in the 21st Century Given the wall-to-wall coverage of the US and its war on Iran, it looks very much like Trump is the key player. He is not. The United States may have far more military power than Israel, but the key player is Benjamin Netanyahu. Moreover, the Israeli prime minister has fallen into a trap of his own making, and is dragging Trump and the US military into that same trap. For Israel, and indirectly for the US, the war has to end in total victory. Anything less is pointless. Seoul says it can deter Pyongyang even if Washington transfers weapons to the Middle East South Korea asserted on Wednesday that it was capable of deterring its northern neighbour from attacking it, even if the United States transfers military assets to the war-torn Middle East. Washington, a key security ally of Seoul, has some 28,500 troops stationed in South Korea and has positioned missile defence systems there to help deter any aggression from North Korea. The two bordering countries are technically still at war since the 1950-1953 conflict, and the North possesses nuclear weapons. The Washington Post reported this week that, according to anonymous officials, the United States was transferring elements of its THAAD, a high-altitude anti-missile system considered one of the most advanced in the world, from South Korea to the Middle East. "Whether or not some USFK (United States Forces Korea) assets are deployed abroad, there is not the slightest problem concerning our deterrent posture towards North Korea, given the level of our military capabilities," the defence department said in a statement sent to AFP on Wednesday.

A pro-Palestinian march in London on Sunday has been banned by the home secretary, Shabana Mahmood, after police warned of a risk of “serious public disorder”. The annual Al Quds Day march has drawn criticism over apparent backing for the Iranian regime after its organisers expressed support for the country’s late leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. MPs voted 304 to 203 in favour of the courts and tribunals bill, which passed its second reading in the Commons. It includes measures to scrap some jury trials, remove the automatic right of appeal from magistrates courts and introduces a new criminal court. Hereditary peerages will be abolished before the next king’s speech after a deal was struck granting life peerages to some Conservatives and cross-benchers losing their seats.
