Iraqi armed group claims drone attack on base at Baghdad airport The Iraqi armed group Saraya Awliya al-Dam said it carried out a drone attack on the Victoria military airbase at Baghdad airport. The group claimed responsibility for the strike in a statement on its Telegram channel. The incident follows a series of drone attacks in Iraq in recent days, including two drones that targeted a US military base and a hotel in Erbil in the Kurdish region of northern Iraq. Last week, a building in Sulaimaniyah was also hit by a drone strike. Footage verified by Al Jazeera showed flames rising from the site.

He said shrapnel “penetrated his back and stomach” and that he was taken to hospital. “By the grace of God, one of the shrapnel tore through his liver and lodged in the wall of the largest blood vessel in his stomach,” Smotrich wrote, adding that the injuries could have been far worse if the vessel had been hit.

Macron proposes multinational mission to escort tankers after war French President Emmanuel Macron said he is discussing a French-led initiative to escort oil and gas tankers through the Strait of Hormuz once the most intense phase of the US-Israeli war on Iran ends, the Associated Press reported. Speaking during a visit to Cyprus, Macron said the mission could involve European and non-European countries and would aim to gradually reopen the key shipping route. He said the operation would be “strictly peaceful and defensive” and would only begin once major strikes have subsided.

MOSCOW, March 9 (Reuters) - Russian President Vladimir Putin, in a telephone conversation on Monday with U.S. President Donald Trump, put forward proposals for a quick settlement of the conflict around Iran, Kremlin foreign policy aide Yuri Ushakov said. Ushakov, giving an account of the conversation to reporters, said the two leaders also discussed the conflict in Ukraine and noted that Russian gains should prompt Kyiv's negotiators to move towards a settlement.

British warplanes have begun "defensive air sorties" in support of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and taken out drones elsewhere in the Middle East amid the ongoing war, the UK defence ministry said Monday. The development came as Britain's response to the conflict was under criticism, including from the US president and the Cypriot government. More US B-52 bombers landed at the UK air force base in Fairford, in southwestern England, on Monday, AFP witnessed, after a first one landed on Friday.
