Israeli first responders on 'maximum alert' under Iran missile fire

At 10:56 pm an alert announcing the approach of an Iranian missile sounds, and a brief, heart-pounding wait begins in the operations room at Magen David Adom (MDA) as first responders get ready to deploy. In this nerve centre for Israel's equivalent of the Red Cross, three floors underground in Ramla, near Tel Aviv, a paramedic adjusts her helmet then picks up the phone to dispatch her colleagues: four debris impact sites have just been reported. All eyes are fixed on screens displaying the number of calls to 101, the number for the national emergency response organisation.

Renowned Palestinian historian Walid Khalidi dies aged 100

Renowned Palestinian historian Walid Khalidi dies aged 100 MEE staff on Mon, 03/09/2026 - 14:13 Scholar and co-founder of the Institute for Palestine Studies devoted his life to documenting Palestinian history and the Nakba Palestinian historian Walid Khalidi holds his degree after receiving an honorary doctorate of humane letters at the American University of Beirut 26 June 2010 (Reuters/Mohamed Azakir) Off Renowned Palestinian historian Walid Khalidi has died aged 100 after a decades-long scholarship focused on the history and displacement of the Palestinian people. The Institute for Palestine Studies (IPS) - a research and publication centre focused on the Palestinian plight that Khalidi co-founded in Beirut in 1963 - said he died in Cambridge, Massachusetts in the US on Sunday.  Khalidi was a leading figure in documenting Palestinian society before the Nakba - the “catastrophe” of 1948, when Zionist militias ethnically cleansed Palestinians from their homeland to pave the way for the creation of Israel. Under his guidance, the institute produced significant studies, including translations between Hebrew, Arabic and English, and it remains a major resource on Palestinian history. Known as “the historian of the Palestinian cause”, Khalidi’s scholarship included translations of Israel’s first Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion’s diaries and those of Moshe Sharett, a former Israeli prime minister and minister of foreign affairs. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); The IPS also published The History of the Haganah, a detailed examination of Zionist militias involved in the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians during the Nakba. Khalidi’s work revealed much previously hidden about the takeover and expulsion of Palestinians, including Plan Dalet, the 1948 master plan that guided the occupation of Palestinian land.  Nakba: Essential books explaining the ethnic cleansing of Palestine and creation of Israel Read More » His encyclopedic collections, including photographs and village records, provide rare insights into pre-1948 Palestine. Notable works include Before Their Diaspora: A Photographic History of the Palestinians and All That Remains: The Palestinian Villages Occupied and Depopulated by Israel in 1948. Born in July 1925 to a family of academics in Jerusalem, Khalidi also had a distinguished academic career. He taught at Oxford until 1956, leaving in protest over the British-French-Israeli Suez intervention, and later served as a professor at the American University of Beirut until 1982. He subsequently became a research fellow at Harvard’s Center for International Affairs. Throughout his life, Khalidi combined scholarship with political engagement. He had ties with the Arab Nationalist Movement, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine and the Palestinian National Liberation Movement. He represented Palestine in the Arab League delegation in 1983 and in the joint Palestinian-Jordanian delegation to the Middle East peace talks in Washington, DC in 1991. A proponent of a two-state solution, Khalidi described it in Foreign Affairs in 1988 as “the only conceptual candidate for a historical compromise of this century-old conflict”. Adding to market jitters were Tehran's hardline succession plans which cooled hopes of a quick end to hostilities.

Gulf states turn to private foreign military specialists amid Iran attacks

Gulf states turn to private foreign military specialists amid Iran attacks Levent Kemal on Mon, 03/09/2026 - 11:34 Iranian strikes on Gulf Arab countries prompt them to reevaluate their defence capabilities Smoke plumes billowing in Dubai after a projectile strike on 2 March 2026 (Planet Labs PBC/AFP) Off Gulf countries that have come under fire from Iranian missiles and drones are seeking private military personnel and technicians, two people familiar with the issue told Middle East Eye. United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar prompted these countries to re-evaluate their defence capabilities, with many Iranian projectiles continuing to hit buildings and energy facilities. US-Israeli war on Iran that began on 28 February. said that he seeks regime change as he gloated over the success of killing more than 40 high-ranking Iranian officials in one air raid, which included the supreme leader, Ali Khamenei. While the UAE is operating Terminal High Altitude Area Defence (Thaad) systems, Qatar, Bahrain and Kuwait use both Patriot air defence systems and the more advanced PAC-3 MSE interceptor.  They are also seeking pilots, the sources said. These demands have been communicated through intermediaries to certain private military companies. “I cannot speak about the specific countries requesting personnel, but from Europe the demand is primarily for system specialists,” one of the sources told MEE. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); 'First priority is defence' “Their first priority is defence,” the source said, adding that the Gulf countries had become seriously aware of their systemic shortcomings. “Their second priority is the logistics and maintenance component of air power, along with a limited number of pilots with operational experience.” 'Funding peace or war?': UAE billionaire slams Trump for dragging Gulf into Iran war Read More » A third person familiar with the matter said that Gulf countries are also exploring secondary systems compatible with US systems, as well as smaller kill-web ones capable of supporting them. A kill-web system is a network that combines intel and warfare capabilities across different domains, including land, sea, air and cyberspace. The source added that, while not necessarily questioning the effectiveness of the American protective umbrella, there are complaints regarding its scope. “They believed they were completely secure. They were not open to any criticism on this matter. They rejected dozens of proposals. Now, our phones will not stop ringing,” the source said.
