IEA to release emergency oil reserves as Middle East war hits supply

IEA to release emergency oil reserves as Middle East war hits supply The International Energy Agency (IEA) says emergency oil reserves will begin entering global markets as governments move to stabilise supplies disrupted by the Middle East war. Member states agreed on 11 March to release strategic stockpiles after energy prices surged following the outbreak of the conflict. The agency said the move represents the largest coordinated response of its kind. “Individual implementation plans have been submitted to the IEA by Member countries. These plans indicate that stocks will be made available by IEA Member countries in Asia Oceania immediately,” the agency said. It added that “stocks from IEA Member countries in the Americas and Europe will be made available starting from the end of March”. The IEA said governments will release about 271.7 million barrels of oil worldwide to help ease supply pressures. “The war in the Middle East is creating the largest supply disruption in the history of the global oil market,” it said, describing the release as a “significant and welcome buffer”.

In heavy rain, Lebanese fleeing war huddle under makeshift shelters

By Ahmed Kerdi BEIRUT/SIDON, March 15 (Reuters) - Hussain Murtada and his family are camping in the back of a small truck, a flimsy tarpaulin shielding them from a storm on Sunday, with no room left at shelters for displaced people in the southern Lebanese city of Sidon. "We are putting tarp over it because we're soaked," said Murtada, using string to fasten the plastic sheet over the back of the truck parked on the seafront. Inside, an infant peered out, surrounded by pillows, blankets and other possessions.

Cory Booker calls both parties ‘feckless’ for ceding war powers to Trump

Democrat says Congress ‘doing nothing’ may embolden president to attack countries such as Cuba and North Korea Democratic US senator Cory Booker has criticized both his own political party as well as its Republican counterpart for being “feckless” in ceding congressional war powers to Donald Trump, saying that their decision could embolden the president to unilaterally attack Cuba, North Korea and other countries. “I’m going to be one of those Democrats [who] say I think both parties have been feckless in allowing the growth of the power of the presidency,” Booker said on Sunday on CNN’s State of the Union. A royal rule of thumb for measurements | Brief letters

Sizing up | Kind Hearts and Coronets | Accounting for taste | Deranged scumbags Regarding unusual measurements (Letters, 13 March), at the time of conversion to the metric system in the 1970s, a colleague proposed a novel set of standard units – the barleycorn, firkin, fortnight system. The barleycorn unit of length, based historically on one-third of the length of Henry VIII’s thumb to the first joint (about one inch); the firkin unit of weight equivalent to nine gallons of water; the fortnight unit of time – a micro-fortnight is about 1.2 seconds. Unfortunately, it never caught on and faded into the mists of time, but is remembered with fondness for my colleague, who had a classical education. Mike Rowe Offham, Kent • I share Peter Bradshaw’s admiration of the original Kind Hearts and Coronets (How to Make a Killing review – one man on a bloody quest for his inheritance is a remake too far, 11 March). It’s surely one of the wittiest scripts ever written, culminating in a brilliant twist. As magnificent as Alec Guinness is in his multiple roles, I’ve always felt that Dennis Price, with his elegant performance and silky voiceover narration, is every bit his equal.
