Israel criticises British defence secretary using clown emoji in online post Imran Mulla on Sun, 03/08/2026 - 11:05 Israeli foreign ministry condemns John Healey on its official X account for saying Iran's strikes on Israel last year were proportionate British Defence Secretary John Healey speaks to the media at Nato headquarters in Brussels on 12 February 2026 (AFP) Off Israel's foreign ministry has criticised British Defence Secretary John Healey using a clown emoji after he said Iran's strikes last year were "proportionate" while criticising its attacks on the Gulf this year. The foreign ministry's official X account on Saturday posted a 14-second clip of Healey speaking to Sky News at the UK's Royal Air Force Akrotiri base in Cyprus earlier this week. In the interview, the British defence secretary had said: "We're now in a position to judge better the nature of the Iranian response to the strikes. We can see they're increasingly indiscriminate, they're rising, they're widespread, they're uncontrolled." In the short clip posted by the Israeli foreign ministry, Healey remarked: "What is significant about this Iranian response is it's different to last year. Last year, it was proportionate; it was targeted only at military installations. This year, in the first 24 hours, we saw them strike 10 different countries." The Israeli foreign ministry used a clown emoji to criticise Healey, posting: "British Secretary of Defense🤡 adopts the Iranian regime’s definition of 'military installations': Hospitals, residential areas and universities. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); "Consequently, all Israeli casualties were civilians! "The Secretary implies that targeting Israeli civilians is 'proportional'." Polls show Britons oppose US use of UK bases against Iran Read More » In October, Israeli Diaspora Minister Amichai Chikli disparagingly called the British prime minister "Palestinian" after Keir Starmer criticised him for inviting far-right activist and convicted criminal Tommy Robinson to Israel. The Israeli foreign ministry's attack on Britain's defence minister comes as tensions rise between London and Washington. The rift followed Britain’s initial refusal to allow the US to use the joint UK-US base on Diego Garcia in the Chagos Archipelago to launch strikes on Iran. The US is now using British military bases for the purpose of targeting Iranian missile sites. B-1 Lancer bombers took off from Gloucestershire in southern England to carry out strikes over the weekend. US President Donald Trump has nonetheless repeatedly attacked Starmer, calling him "unhelpful" and "no Winston Churchill". On Saturday evening, Trump accused Starmer of seeking to "join wars after we've already won". UK Politics News Post Date Override 0 Update Date Mon, 05/04/2020 - 21:19 Update Date Override 0

White House worries as gas prices jump amid ongoing US-Israel war on Iran The Guardian
Iran experts believe the symbolism of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s death is overwhelming and that the regime will struggle to fill the power vacuum Even before US and Israeli missiles began raining down, those sensing the winds of change were forecasting a Berlin Wall moment for Iran. Mass nationwide demonstrations in January – although savagely repressed, causing the deaths of an estimated tens of thousands – were seen as portents of a reckoning for the country’s ruling theocrats, just as the popular breaching of Berlin’s fearful symbol of Europe’s cold war division spelled the downfall of East Germany’s communist regime in 1989. A fourth Palestinian died after inhaling tear gas fired by Israeli forces during one of the settler assaults. The first incident took place on Saturday in the Wadi al-Rakhim area of Masafer Yatta, south of Hebron, when settlers opened fire at two brothers from close range. Amir Mohammad Shanaran was killed in the attack, while his brother was critically wounded, according to Palestinian media. Medical sources said he arrived at a hospital in Ramallah in cardiac arrest. At least seven other people were wounded in the attacks, including three with gunshot wounds to the head, one with a pelvic injury and another shot in the shoulder. Palestinian Vice President Hussein al-Sheikh condemned the attacks as a “major escalation of settler terrorism”. “We call on the international community to intervene immediately to protect innocent Palestinians and to take serious punitive measures,” Sheikh wrote on X. Hamas also mourned the men killed, saying they died while “confronting the barbaric attack by settlers”, and called on Palestinians to “escalate confrontation and clashes” against Israeli forces and repel “settler attacks by all available means”. Surge in attacks The latest violence comes amid a rise in settler attacks recorded since the US and Israel launched their war on Iran last week. According to Hassan Mleihat, director of Al-Bidar Human Rights Organization, attacks have increased by 25 percent since the war began, with assaults reported in several areas simultaneously. Mleihat told the Anadolu Agency that settlers and Israeli authorities were exploiting the political and security circumstances created by the war to intensify pressure on Palestinians to displace them from their land. Attacks by Israeli settlers against Palestinians in the West Bank are frequent, but they have surged since October 2023, often involving live fire and organised efforts to displace nomadic Palestinian communities. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); According to Palestinian estimates, more than 40 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli settlers in the West Bank since October 2023.
