Energy prices have soared as Iranian strikes and reports of mines prevent ships from transiting the chokepoint Middle East crisis – live updates More than 1,000 cargo ships, mainly oil and gas tankers, have been blocked from transiting the strait of Hormuz by the Israeli-US war against Iran after Tehran closed the key maritime passage. Officials in the Trump administration have suggested efforts to get ships moving again, but amid continued Iranian strikes on tankers, and reports that Iran has started mining the narrow waterway, the mooted naval escorts have failed to materialise – even as energy prices have soared. No evidence Iran has mined Strait of Hormuz, Pentagon's Hegseth says There is no clear evidence that Iran has placed mines in the Strait of Hormuz, US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth told a news briefing on Friday. The assessment by Hegseth contrasts with news reports earlier this week suggesting Iran had deployed about a dozen mines in the Strait of Hormuz, through which a fifth of the world's oil supply travels. Asked about the possibility of mines in the Strait, Hegseth said: "We've heard them talk about it just like you've reported recklessly and wildly about it. But... we have no clear evidence of that." Hegseth's comments come as the United States and other countries face spiking oil and gas prices, with the US-Israel war on Iran entering its 14th day, and oil prices hovering near $100 a barrel on Friday.
Trump says US would escort oil tankers in Strait of Hormuz if needed President Donald Trump said on Friday that the United States would escort vessels through the Strait of Hormuz if needed and hoped that US-led war efforts would go well. He told Fox News he also planned to strike Iran “very hard over the next week.”
"I am worried," a sailor stuck in the Gulf told AFP on Friday, his vessel unable to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, blocked for nearly two weeks after US-Israeli strikes on Iran. "Every day on the ship, I can see missile launches and hear explosions, making me feel like I was in danger," said Wang Shang, 32. Wang, a Chinese national from the landlocked central province of Henan, works on a foreign ship used to transport liquefied petroleum gas sourced from the energy-rich region.

US issues 30-day waiver allowing countries to purchase sanctioned Russian oil The United States issued a 30-day waiver allowing countries to purchase sanctioned Russian oil currently stranded at sea, in a move aimed at stabilising global energy markets shaken by the war involving Iran, Reuters news agency reported. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the measure was intended to ease supply pressures as oil prices surged following disruptions in the Middle East, as shipping through the Strait of Hormuz has been disrupted by the conflict, sending global energy prices sharply higher. Washington has also announced the release of 172 million barrels from the US Strategic Petroleum Reserve as part of a broader plan by the International Energy Agency to release about 400 million barrels to calm markets.
