Iranian president: Tehran will not surrender to bullies Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian says Tehran did not initiate the war with the United States and Israel, insisting Iran is exercising its right to defend itself against attack. Writing on X, Pezeshkian said protecting the country from military aggression was Iran’s “natural right which we are good at”. He also warned regional states against allowing their territory to be used for attacks on Iran. “Using the American bases against Iran in the region, with the purpose of disturbing our relations with our neighbours, should be stopped,” he wrote, adding that he raised the issue during a phone call with French President Emmanuel Macron. Pezeshkian said peace in the region could not be achieved while Iran faced ongoing attacks. “Peace and stability in the region cannot be achieved while disregarding the Zionist-American invasion [of] our country. The Islamic Republic of Iran will not surrender to bullies.” He also called for international condemnation of the invasion and said talk of ending the war was premature. “Speaking of ending the war is meaningless until we ensure there will be no more attacks in our land in the future.”

Iran warns US over attacks on Kharg Island oil facilities Iran’s army has warned Washington against launching another attack on Kharg Island, a key hub for the country’s oil exports, after recent US strikes on military facilities there. Army spokesperson Brigadier General Abolfazl Shekarchi issued the warning as tensions between Tehran and Washington continue to escalate. “US officials and military repeat that they want to attack Kharg Island,” he said, according to Iran’s Tasnim news agency. He added: “We warn that if the criminal US commits aggression and attacks Kharg Island, its facilities, and its oil terminal, we will decisively turn all the oil and gas facilities of the country of origin of the aggression into ashes.” US President Donald Trump has recently threatened further strikes on the island.

Iran’s Araghchi denies contact with US envoy Witkoff Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi says his last communication with US envoy Steve Witkoff took place before Washington launched its latest military strike on Iran. Writing on X on Monday, Araghchi said there had been no communication after the attack, rejecting suggestions that diplomatic contact had continued. “My last contact with Mr Witkoff was prior to his employer's decision to kill diplomacy with another illegal military attack on Iran,” he wrote. Araghchi also dismissed claims circulating in media reports that talks were ongoing. “Any claim to the contrary appears geared solely to mislead oil traders and the public,” he said. European leaders warn against Israeli ground incursion into Lebanon MEE staff on Mon, 03/16/2026 - 20:32 Canada, France, Germany, Italy, and the UK insist that Hezbollah must be disarmed The aftermath of an Israeli strike on a healthcare centre in Borj Qalaouiya, southern Lebanon, on 15 March 2026 (Mohammad Yassine/Reuters) Off The leaders of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, and the UK on Monday said Israel must avoid mounting a ground incursion into Lebanon, after it resumed its war on the country's south two weeks ago. They said they are "gravely concerned" by the attacks on all sides, and demanded a return to the negotiating table. "A significant Israeli ground offensive would have devastating humanitarian consequences and could lead to a protracted conflict. It must be averted," the leaders warned in a joint statement. "The humanitarian situation in Lebanon, including ongoing mass displacement, is already deeply alarming." As of Monday, one million people in Lebanon have been displaced because of this latest spate of attacks, according to the country's disasters and risk management unit. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); At least 886 Lebanese have been killed so far, with another 2,141 wounded. Hezbollah began firing missiles at Israel shortly after Israel began its joint war with the US on Iran on 28 February. A November 2024 truce between Hezbollah and Israel, brokered by the Trump administration, had already been violated by Israel hundreds of times. But Israel says it only targets weapons depots and senior operatives within Hezbollah that pose an imminent threat. How Iran war will shape the future of Hezbollah and Israeli expansionism Read More » Monday's joint statement condemned "attacks directed at civilians", calling them "unacceptable". "We condemn attacks directed at civilians, civilian infrastructure, health workers and infrastructure, as well as the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon. These actions are unacceptable, and we call on all parties to act in accordance with international humanitarian law," the statement says. "Hezbollah’s attacks on Israel and the targeting of civilians must cease, and they must disarm. We condemn Hezbollah’s decision to join Iran in hostilities, which further jeopardises regional peace and security." The leaders called on the Lebanese government to disarm the group and prohibit its military activities. Hezbollah, however, has insisted that it cannot disarm as long as Israel poses a threat along its southern border. It has also, for decades, proven itself a far more entrenched fighting force than the army, with its longstanding support from Iran.
