The Guardian view on the Iran war and international law: it’s worse than a mistake; it’s a crime | Editorial

Double standards in Europe and elsewhere are laid bare by the muted response to US and Israeli aggression and the killing of civilians When Russia launched its full scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the international condemnation from Europe and elsewhere was loud and clear. Leaders did not expect legal threats to shift Vladimir Putin or end war crimes by his troops. But they understood the importance of naming what had happened as an illegal act of aggression, and of seeking to hold those responsible accountable. The same countries have been strikingly muted since the US and Israel launched their war on Iran. This too was an act of aggression. Spain’s Pedro Sánchez has been lonely in his forthright condemnation, though Norway and others also pointed to the breach of international law. Meanwhile, Australia’s prime minister, Anthony Albanese, offered unreserved support and Germany’s chancellor, Friedrich Merz, declared that it was “not the moment to lecture our partners and allies”. Six Americans killed after US refuelling jet crashes in Iraq

Six Americans killed after US refuelling jet crashes in Iraq MEE staff on Fri, 03/13/2026 - 15:58 The US has lost 13 soldiers since its joint war with Israel began on Iran US Air Force members conduct a pre-flight brief outside of a KC-135 Stratotanker, before an aerial refuelling mission at al-Udeid Air Base, in Qatar, in this undated handout picture released on 1 August 2019 (Chris Drzazgowski/US Air Force via Reuters) Off The US announced on Friday that all six of its soldiers aboard a KC-135 refuelling aircraft that crashed in western Iraq a day earlier have been killed.  "The aircraft was lost while flying over friendly airspace March 12 during Operation Epic Fury," US Central Command, the Pentagon's Middle East hub, said on X.  "The circumstances of the incident are under investigation. However, the loss of the aircraft was not due to hostile fire or friendly fire," Centcom asserted.  "The identities of the service members are being withheld until 24 hours after next of kin have been notified." The deaths bring the total number of US personnel killed since 28 February and the start of the US-Israeli war on Iran to 13. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); At a press briefing on Friday morning in Washington, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth told reporters that "War is hell, war is chaos." When pressed by a reporter on exactly how many American casualties there have been so far, and also the locations where they were killed, Hegseth hesitated before turning to the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, Dan Caine, to answer for him. "A bunch have returned to duty," Caine said. "We've had... in Kuwait, Jordan, down across the southern flank... a variety of places, most from one-way attack strikes," he added, not providing any actual figures. Hegseth jumped in to say that for the purposes of "clarity", the Pentagon is not indicating how many personnel are "KIA" (killed in action) or "WIA" (wounded in action), but that "90 percent" have returned to duty. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); The comments ultimately proved more confusing.  President Donald Trump had warned from his very first remarks on the war that Americans would be dying, and potentially in large numbers.  Iran has claimed hundreds of American dead from its targeting of US assets in the Gulf region, but has not yet provided evidence.  At least 150 US military personnel are confirmed wounded, it was revealed earlier this week.  It's unclear if that figure includes the 19 US personnel flown from Saudi Arabia to Germany on Thursday after sustaining wounds in a drone attack. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); At the largest Pentagon-run medical facility in Germany, staff have temporarily suspended care for non-urgent cases to focus on combat injuries, the Military Times reported on Thursday. The move has fuelled speculation that there are many more seriously wounded than has been acknowledged.  'Other fronts' Despite an investigation underway to determine the cause of the aircraft crash, Centcom appeared certain it was not due to enemy fire.  But the Institute for the Study of War noted on Thursday that "Iran or Iranian-backed Iraqi militias almost certainly conducted several attacks targeting US and European forces in Iraq on March 11 and 12". Kataib Hezbollah is the most active Iran-backed militia in Iraq, and it has made targets out of US forces for more than two decades. The US invasion and destabilisation of Iraq in 2003 created a vacuum whereby Iran was able to assume significant influence among Shia fighters in the country.  Just hours before the US jet crash, Iran's new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, warned in his first statement - read out by Iranian state broadcasting - that his country would be activating new fronts to take on the US and Israel.  "Studies have been conducted on opening other fronts in which the enemy has little experience and will be extremely vulnerable in them, and their activation will be carried out if the war situation continues and based on the observance of interests," he said. US issues $10m reward for information on Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei

US issues $10m reward for information on Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei The US Department of State’s Rewards for Justice programme has called for information on “Iranian terrorist leaders”, including Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, son of the late supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. “These individuals command and direct various elements of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which plans, organises and executes terrorism around the world,” the poster, shared on X, states. The reward is capped at $10 million and could make people eligible for “relocation”.  Officials whom the US is seeking information on include Minister of Intelligence Esmail Khatib; deputy chief of staff Ali Asghar Hejazi; Major General Yahya Rahim Safavi; Brigadier General Eskandar Momeni; and Secretary to the Supreme Council Ali Larijani.  Mojtaba Khamenei has not been seen since his election to the position on Sunday, and US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, in a press conference at the Pentagon, claimed that Iran's new supreme leader is "wounded" and "likely disfigured". Hegseth says Gulf states 'going on offensive' against Iran

Hegseth says Gulf states 'going on offensive' against Iran MEE staff on Fri, 03/13/2026 - 17:17 Secretary of War also said Strait of Hormuz was open for transit, except that Iran was shooting vessels there US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth answers a question as he, President Donald Trump, and special envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff speak to members of the media travelling on Air Force One as Trump heads to Miami, on 7 March 2026 (Roberto Schmidt/Getty Images/AFP) Off US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth said that Gulf countries are “going on the offensive” as he argued that the US’s war on Iran is going in Washington’s favour. “The only thing that is widening is our advantage. Not to mention our Gulf allies stepping up even more now, going on the offence,” Hegseth said at a press conference on Friday. The US’s Gulf allies have not said they are joining the US war on Iran, and Hegseth’s remarks have already raised eyebrows. For example, on Friday, he also said that the Strait of Hormuz was “open for transit” except for the fact that Iran was shooting at vessels. The Gulf states lobbied US President Donald Trump against attacking Iran, out of fear that they would be in the Islamic Republic’s crosshairs. Iranian strikes have already hit Doha, Dubai, and Manama, but those strikes could escalate significantly if Iran chooses to do so.  (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); This week, the United Nations Security Council passed a resolution sponsored by the Gulf Cooperation Council condemning Iran’s attack on the region. “Iran's international isolation is not a slogan but a reality,” Anwar Gargash, UAE diplomatic adviser, wrote on X after the vote. US 'stonewalling' requests by Gulf states to replenish interceptors, sources say Read More » While the Gulf states have lashed out at Iran for attacking them despite their efforts to prevent a war, they are also angry at the US for brushing aside their security concerns, Middle East Eye has reported. The US has been unable to address all the requests from Gulf states to replenish precious air defence interceptors. Many regional analysts have also said the US’s military bases in the Gulf - broadly established after the 1991 Gulf War - have made their countries targets for Iran. Consequences of attacks in Gulf The US’s role as security guarantor of the region has been rocked by Iran’s unprecedented closure of the Strait of Hormuz, the waterway that carries about 20 percent of the world’s crude oil and natural gas.” Kuwait, Iraq, Bahrain, Qatar, the UAE and Saudi Arabia have all had to slash production and, in some cases, declare force majeure as a result of Iranian attacks. At least six commercial vessels were attacked in the Gulf this week. The Financial Times reported on Friday that Gulf states have collectively lost an estimated $15.1bn in energy revenues since the start of the US and Israeli war on Iran, according to data provided by commodities analytics firm Kpler. Qatar, Bahrain, the UAE and Kuwait have been some of the hardest hit, but Saudi Arabia has also been attacked. Hegseth’s claim could make the Gulf states more of a target, as Iran has said it will forcefully respond against Gulf states that join the US-Israeli war. While Iran’s strikes have hit commercial buildings in the Gulf, in general, it has shown a sophisticated ability to hit US military bases and energy infrastructure.
