EU to provide €100m in humanitarian aid to Lebanon, von der Leyen says European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the EU plans to provide €100m ($115.85m) in humanitarian aid to Lebanon following a phone call with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun. In a post on X on Wednesday, von der Leyen said the bloc had already delivered 40 tonnes of supplies and plans to organise further humanitarian flights, expressing solidarity with Lebanon and welcoming the decision to ban all Hezbollah military activities. The EU leader did not refer to Israel's oslaught on Lebanon and did not criticise Israel or the US for their war.

Amid fears the conflict will strengthen Russia, Ursula von der Leyen’s embrace of US-backed regime change already looks like a doomed strategy • Don’t get This Is Europe delivered to your inbox? Sign up here The message from Ursula von der Leyen was blunt. “Europe can no longer be a custodian for the old-world order” and needs a “more realistic and interest-driven foreign policy”. In a major foreign policy speech this week, the European Commission president said the EU would always “defend and uphold the rules-based system” but in a precarious and chaotic world, that could no longer be relied upon. On the day she spoke, missiles were raining down on Tehran and southern Iran as the war entered its 10th day, proving her point. Reverberating around Europe, the Middle East conflict has triggered a range of responses. France is sending a dozen naval vessels to the Mediterranean and the Red Sea. EU officials convened an ad-hoc summit with Middle Eastern leaders in a show of solidarity with the region. EU humanitarian aid for Lebanon is being dispatched to help 130,000 people, after at least half a million were displaced by Israeli bombs and evacuation orders. Continue reading...

US military warns civilians to avoid ports where Iranian navy is operating The US military has warned civilians to avoid port facilities where Iranian naval forces are operating, saying it cannot guarantee their safety near Iranian military vessels. The warning was issued by US Central Command (Centcom) in an official statement on Wednesday. “Iranian dockworkers, administrative personnel, and commercial vessel crews should avoid Iranian naval vessels and military equipment,” Centcom said. The statement comes as the US continues strikes against Iranian naval assets. According to Centcom, US forces have sunk or destroyed around 60 Iranian vessels since the start of the campaign.

Russia giving Iran 'specific advice on drone tactics', CNN reports Russia is providing Iran with advanced drone warfare tactics developed during its war in Ukraine, according to a Western intelligence official cited by CNN. The assistance reportedly includes guidance on how to deploy Iranian-designed Shahed drones, which Russia has mass-produced and used extensively in Ukraine, to strike US and Gulf targets in the Middle East. The official said Moscow’s support appears to have evolved from general intelligence sharing to more specific operational advice on drone targeting strategies. According to CNN, the tactics may involve coordinated waves of drones and changing flight paths designed to evade air defences, methods Russia has used repeatedly in Ukraine. The intelligence official also raised concerns about broader Iranian threats in the Gulf, including the potential use of mines in the Strait of Hormuz and maritime drone or small-boat attacks against US naval forces, CNN reported.
Israeli attacks never stopped, and the mechanism meant to police violations had no power to stop them.
Yet the fallout from the Iran war could push Gulf rivals to cooperate, opening space for diplomacy on Sudan.
UN aid chief urges ‘humanitarian exemptions’ to get aid through Strait of Hormuz The United Nations aid chief Tom Fletcher warned on Wednesday that the US-Israeli war on Iran was impacting aid supply routes and urged all parties to ensure “exemptions for our humanitarian supplies”. “I’m worried that actually further escalation will damage other supply routes,” Fletcher told reporters in Geneva, saying he was “appealing to all the parties to try and secure those routes, including the Strait of Hormuz, for our humanitarian traffic, and ... to ensure that we have humanitarian exemptions for our humanitarian supplies”.
This is a breaking news story.
