Facing rockets, Arabs in northern Israel fume over lack of shelters

Threatened by volleys of Hezbollah rockets and missiles from Iran, residents of Arab towns in northern Israel are complaining about a lack of public shelters. "The state is obliged to build public shelters so that the entire population has access to safe havens," Mazen Ghanayem, mayor of the town of Sakhnin, told AFP. "Yet our town doesn't have a single public shelter worthy of the name." Located just 20 kilometres from the border with Lebanon, the town's 36,000 residents have grown all too used to the rockets fired by Hezbollah.

EU and UK denounce settler violence in West Bank

EU and UK denounce settler violence in West Bank The European Union and United Kingdom have issued statements calling for an end to Israeli settler violence against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank this week.  “We are appalled by the killing of five Palestinians in incidents of settler violence over the past week,” the British Consulate General in Jerusalem said in a statement posted on X. It added that “Israeli security forces have described such violence as ‘unacceptable’” and called on them to follow with “swift, thorough investigations and accountability for those responsible”.  The EU issued similar comments on Tuesday, calling on Israeli authorities to take "immediate and effective action" and urging Israel to "abide by its obligations under international law to protect the Palestinian population in the occupied territory". Israeli evacuation orders affect 14 percent of Lebanon, NGO says

Israeli evacuation orders affect 14 percent of Lebanon, NGO says Over an eighth of Lebanon's territory is under Israel's forced evacuation orders, an aid group said on Friday, while the United Nations peacekeeping mission said Israeli ground troops were making incursions and erecting roadblocks. The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) said Israel's evacuation orders for southern Lebanon and parts of Beirut now covered about 1,470 square kilometres, or about 14 percent of the country. "Israel’s mass evacuation orders have expanded to broad geographic directives, often demanding immediate movement, creating panic and fear across communities that strikes are imminent - even when they are not," said Maureen Philippon, NRC country director in Lebanon. Israeli strikes on Lebanon since 2 March killed almost 700 people, and displaced more than 800,000 in Lebanon. Iran team condemns Trump over World Cup threats

Iran team condemns Trump over World Cup threats Iran national football team has pushed back against remarks by US President Donald Trump suggesting it would not be “appropriate” for Iran to take part in this year’s 2026 FIFA World Cup. In a statement, the team stressed that the global tournament is governed by FIFA rather than any individual country. “The World Cup is a historic and international event and its governing body is FIFA — not any individual country. Iran’s national team, with strength and a series of decisive victories achieved by the brave sons of Iran, was among the first teams to qualify for this major tournament,” the statement said. “Certainly no one can exclude Iran’s national team from the World Cup. The only country that could be excluded is one that merely carries the title of “host” yet lacks the ability to provide security for the teams participating in this global event”.
